Ogun APC inaugurates campaign councilfor Remo Federal Constituency by-election
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, yesterday, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to boost voters’ confidence and assure the credibility of the bye-elections for the Edo Central Senatorial District and Ovia Federal Constituency.
The opposition party made the call in Benin, following the appeal for credible, fair, open, and transparent polls ahead of the August 16 bye-elections.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Chairman, Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, Dr Tony Aziegbemi.
Azeigbemi said the call became necessary as the PDP in Edo State is highly prepared for the polls and is confident that it will emerge victorious.
Azeigbemi noted that the areas in contention are traditional strongholds of the PDP, adding that with the quality and credentials of its candidates, as well as the support of the people, the PDP is certainly sure of victory at the polls.
The party also demanded that some electoral officers in the state office be redeployed, considering their purported antecedents, alleging that they have been compromised, following alleged roles in the 2024 Edo gubernatorial election.
The statement reads: “We, however, want to express displeasure about some electoral officers whom we are aware, from their antecedents, have been compromised.”
We unequivocally demand the immediate redeployment of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) due to his ignoble role in the last governorship election.
“His actions during the last gubernatorial polls undermined the credibility and integrity of the electoral process, and we cannot allow such an official to oversee the forthcoming bye-elections in Edo State.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, must, as a matter of urgency, meet these demands and boost voters’ confidence and assure the credibility of the process.
“We also demand that the Electoral Officers (EOs) during the 2024 gubernatorial elections who were in Oredo, Ikpoba-Okha, Egor, Etsako West, Etsako East, and Akoko Edo steer clear of the bye-elections. Their involvement in the irregularities that marred the last governorship election makes their participation unacceptable.”
ALSO, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has inaugurated its Campaign Council and Committee for the by-election into the House of Representatives for Remo Federal Constituency, Ogun State, scheduled for August 16, 2025.
The seat became vacant following the death of Adewunmi Onanuga, who represented the Constituency made up of Ikenne, Remo North and Sagamu local Councils.
Speaking at the inauguration held at the Multipurpose Hall, Akarigbo Palace, Sagamu, the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, emphasised the need for unity among the party faithful to ensure that the party’s candidate, Adesola Elegbeji, emerges victorious.
