Jigawa Assembly to partner with NUJ to sanitise journalism

The Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Haruna Aliyu Dangyatin, has pledged the Assembly’s full support for the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, in its mission to promote professionalism and strengthen ethical journalism practices across the state.

Dangyatin gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the newly elected leadership of the NUJ Jigawa Council to the State Assembly in Dutse.

He described the partnership as a strategic move toward fostering credible journalism, combating misinformation, and improving public trust in media.

According to him, the Assembly is committed to working closely with the NUJ to raise the standard of information dissemination and ensure responsible media engagement in the state.

“I recognize the critical role journalists play in nation-building and public accountability,” the Speaker said. “As Speaker of this House, I am keen on collaborating with the NUJ to raise the bar of journalism in Jigawa, combat misinformation, and support efforts that promote ethical and development-oriented reporting.”

Dangyatin emphasized the media’s influence in shaping public opinion, driving good governance, and safeguarding democracy. He called for renewed efforts to sanitize the journalism profession in Jigawa by eliminating unethical practices and ensuring that only credible, fact-based, and constructive information is shared with the public.

He also commended the leadership of the NUJ for their unwavering dedication to upholding professionalism and transparency in their operations, assuring them of the Assembly’s willingness to collaborate on media-related policies, training, and capacity-building initiatives for journalists across the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ Jigawa State Council, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim, appreciated the Speaker for his progressive outlook and affirmed the union’s readiness to uphold journalistic integrity, objectivity, and accountability in line with both national and international standards.

He stressed the urgent need to address the growing challenge of quackery within the journalism space in Jigawa, declaring that under the current NUJ leadership, such practices would no longer be tolerated.

“The time has come for us to take bold steps to cleanse the profession in Jigawa. We will ensure that only trained, verified, and ethical journalists are allowed to operate, in order to restore public confidence in the media,” Comrade Ibrahim said.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration between the legislature and the media, with a common goal of promoting development and democratic governance in Jigawa State.
