Man pulled from rubble 10 hours after Abuja building collapse

A 27-year-old man was rescued on Sunday after being trapped for nearly 10 hours in the rubble of a collapsed three-storey building in the Lifecamp area of Abuja, police said.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command said the building collapse occurred at about 6:15 pm on Saturday. A distress call was received and the Divisional Police Officer for Lifecamp mobilised a rescue team to the scene.

Police said the area was cordoned off while a coordinated rescue operation began involving the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the FCT Administration’s Development Control Department, and construction firms Julius Berger and Zeberced.

“At about 4:00 am on 3rd August 2025, rescue teams successfully extricated Aliyu Salisu, a 27-year-old male and citizen of the Niger Republic, the lone victim who had remained trapped in the rubble for close to 10 hours of a life-saving operation,” police spokesperson Josephine Adeh said.

“He was immediately rushed to Cedar Crest Hospital, Gudu, for medical evaluation and comprehensive care. He’s currently responding to treatment,” she added.

Commissioner of Police Ajao Adewale, who was at the scene to oversee operations, praised the combined efforts of emergency services, development control officials, construction companies, and community members.

“I commend the timely and professional response of both NEMA and FCTA Development Control officials, as well as other service commanders who were on the ground with their men, and members of the community,” Adewale said.

The command urged residents to remain vigilant and to report emergencies or suspicious incidents. “The Commissioner of Police calls on residents to contact the Command’s Control Room on 0803 200 3913 or 0806 158 1938,” Adeh said.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the collapse, and no other casualties were announced at the time of the report.
