Abeokuta set for maiden South-West states’ schools sports camp

Schools sports in the South-West is set to witness a new dimension in grassroots development with the maiden sports camp organised by the Wamufat Youth Community Development Foundation (WYCDF), in collaboration with the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF).

According to the organisers, the seven-day camp, which will feature the six states in the region, will run from August 10 to 16, 2025, at the Agroterra Sports Complex in Joga-Orile, near Abeokuta, Ogun State.

In a statement yesterday, the foundation said that over 600 students and gamemasters from Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, and Ondo are expected to feature in the camp, which combines sports training, education, mentorship and personal development.

According to the foundation, preparations are in top gear for the event, which aims to empower young people through structured sports activities, values-based coaching, and wellness education. The programme will bring together coaches, games masters, facilitators, and volunteers to instil discipline, teamwork, and healthy living in participants.

The foundation said that the initiative aligns with its broader mission to use sports as a tool for positive change, especially in underserved communities, adding, “Throughout the camp, participants will engage in daily athletics training, motivational sessions, sports drills, mentoring, and leadership development workshops.

“This is not just about games or physical fitness — it’s about building confidence, character, and community,” said a spokesperson for the foundation.

“The camp has received strong backing from local leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora, who see it as a model for sustainable youth development.”

Elated by the development, NSSF President, Olabisi Joseph, commended WYCDF for initiating the programme, assuring that the federation would provide full support to ensure its success. She emphasised that the camp aligns with the International School Sports Federation (ISF) ideals of nurturing well-rounded individuals.
