K1’s Abuja Airport Incident: NAAPE urges NCAA to reinstate ValueJet’s crew licences

The National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) has urged the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to hold musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, also known as Kwam1, accountable for the disruption of a ValueJet flight at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on August 5.

NAAPE National President, Galadima Abednego, in a statement on Saturday in Lagos, said the musician’s conduct constituted “crude, unruly behaviour” and an “arrogant display” that provoked the ValueJet crew.

The incident led to the suspension of the pilot and first officer by the NCAA following what was described as a security breach on the tarmac before a Lagos-bound departure.
Abednego said while the captain could have shown better discretion, responsibility for the disruption should rest with Kwam1. He called for an open and transparent investigation to determine culpability and prevent similar occurrences.

“NAAPE calls on the authorities to lay the blame on KWAM 1 and make him face the full wrath of the law to prevent future incidents,” he stated.

The association urged the NCAA to review its decision against the crew and reinstate their licences, describing them as seasoned pilots with unblemished records. It also appealed to ValueJet to continue supporting the affected staff.

NAAPE commended the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the NCAA Director-General for their swift intervention and urged passengers to exercise restraint in the interest of safety.

NCAA has blacklisted Kwam1 from domestic and international travel through Nigerian airports. The Fuji artiste issued a public apology on Friday.
