The acting General Manager of Ebonyi State’s Legacy FM has been suspended after allegedly criticising Governor Francis Nwifuru’s administration, the station announced.
Odoh Chikwere was removed from his post on Saturday following remarks made both on air and on social media on 8 August, in which he accused the government of poor communication, underperformance among appointees, and lack of clear policy direction.
In a Facebook post, Chikwere urged Nwifuru to “step on toes to achieve results,” warning that the current state of affairs was eroding the governor’s support base.
The station’s management said the decision was due to “unruly behaviour” and breach of its code of conduct.
“The management of Legacy FM 95.1, The Sound of Now, hereby suspends the acting General Manager, Godfrey Chikwere, with immediate effect, till further notice,” the statement read. “He is hereby directed to hand over all the company property in his possession to the next senior officer.”
The move drew an immediate rebuttal from the governor’s office. Chief Press Secretary Monday Uzor dismissed Chikwere’s criticisms as “unfounded and baseless,” highlighting the state government’s support for the broadcaster, which he said included the provision of a new SUV, a transformer, and construction of the access road to the station.
Legacy FM, a private broadcaster based in the state capital Abakaliki, has not commented further on whether Chikwere’s suspension is temporary or permanent.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions in Ebonyi, where the Nwifuru administration has faced sporadic criticism from civil society and opposition figures over governance and service delivery.
