NLNG RA, TIG clubs shine at Centurion championship

NLNG RA took the spotlight at the Centurion Gymnastics Centre Club Competition in South Africa.

Nigerian gymnastics took the spotlight at the Centurion Gymnastics Centre Club Competition in Pretoria, South Africa, as NLNG RA Gymnastics Club and TIG International Gymnastics Club delivered impressive performances against some of Southern Africa’s best.

The prestigious championship featured over 250 gymnasts from leading clubs across South Africa and Uganda, including Centurion, Tuks, Klerksdorp, Visions, Paragon, Bloemfontein, and Jacobsdal.

Nigeria was represented by two clubs — TIG International Gymnastics Club and NLNG RA Gymnastics Club — both showcasing exceptional skill and discipline. NLNG RA in particular earned praise for its resilience and technical brilliance.

One of the standout moments came from Oluwapelumi Ilesanmi of NLNG RA, who clinched a gold medal in what she described as a “dream come true.”

“I was very happy and shocked when my name was mentioned. I sincerely want to thank Coach Timmy and Coach Tony, my dance instructors, my teammates Joan Ezechukwu and Ayobami Oyelahan, NNLG RA Dance and Gymnastics Academy, and especially my mum and dad for always being there for me,” she said.

Team coordinator, Mrs. Nnenna Ahube, lauded the gymnasts’ commitment, saying their success exceeded expectations despite tough competition.

“Our gymnasts worked tirelessly and maintained their focus throughout the competition. Their commitment paid off, and we are immensely proud of what they have achieved. We also thank our parents and Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) for their unwavering support, which was crucial in enabling our athletes to perform at their best,” she said.

TIG International Gymnastics Club also impressed, winning two gold, five silver, and one bronze medal. Gold medalists Angela Marinoni and Dida David wowed with technically precise routines. Senior gymnast Chenille Okpanku collected five silver medals across multiple apparatus, finishing second overall, while Jochbed Ibrahim added a bronze.

Coach Tony Asuquo, who trains both TIG and NLNG RA gymnasts, praised the athletes’ determination but stressed the need for greater investment in the sport.

“There is a wealth of untapped talent in Nigeria. With increased funding, improved facilities, and more exposure, our gymnasts can compete and win on the world stage,” he said.
