No fewer than two locals have been killed, while over 30 mainly women were abducted at Matankari community of Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State in the wee hours of Monday, as gunmen unleashed a terror attack on the village.
According to a community member who did not want his name in print for security reasons, the bandits stormed the community around midnight while it was raining.
“The bandits were shooting sporadically when they invaded the village, and the villagers started running helter scetter for the protection of their lives,” he added.
He said that the villagers killed during the operation were identified as Bashar, son of Ango, and Lawali of Matankari.
“As of now, we have recorded 30 of our people; the majority of them were women abducted during the attack”
According to him, the gunmen also went away with a large quantity of valuables and livestock from the village and ran into the surrounding forest.
“Funeral prayers for the two deceased were held on Tuesday afternoon amid tears and grief from family members and community members”
Most of the community members lamented over the attack, expressing fear that the bandits may return for another deadly attack in the area, forcing many families to be running away from the village while others are demanding urgent security operatives in the axis.
All efforts to get official statement from the Zamfara State Police command spokesman, DSP Yazid Abubakar, proved unsuccessful as at press time.
