Ani, Mayo ruled out as Super Eagles B prepare for last game in Dar es Salaam

Super Eagles B Goalkeeper Ozoemena Ani and defender Stephen Mayo are out of the ongoing African Nations Championship in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda following injuries that have dogged them since arriving in Zanzibar.

The team played their first two games in Zanzibar, losing 0-1 to Senegal and 0-4 to Sudan. These results knocked them out of the championship and made their last game against Congo DR tomorrow a mere formality.

The CHAN Eagles, on Thursday, last week, moved over to Dar es Salaam, where they will play the last Group D game against Congo at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium.

An official of the team told The Guardian yesterday that Ani sustained a knee injury that ruled him out of the last two matches against Senegal and Sudan, and tomorrow’s game against Congo, while Mayo just started light training as he is still recovering from a shoulder injury that he sustained in training on Sunday.

Since arriving in Dar es Salaam, the team have been training by 5.30 p.m. local time to get used to the new pitch and the environment.

Despite their no goal, no point and last place situation in the group, the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, said that the players and officials were determined to beat Congo and show their disappointed fans that the earlier results were not the true reflection of their abilities.

“There is no place for the best third-placed team in this championship, but the team want to replay the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Nigerians with a win in appreciation of the efforts and resources that have been spent on them,” he said.
