The Lagos State Government has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday for all state public servants to mark this year’s Isese Day.
The directive was contained in a circular issued on Monday by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, and distributed across ministries, agencies, local councils, and parastatals.
The circular stated that the decision was approved by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in line with the government’s commitment to promoting indigenous culture, preserving heritage, and supporting traditional institutions.
“It is hereby notified for general information that this year’s Isese Day Celebration will hold on Wednesday, 20th August, 2025,” the circular read.
“In reaffirming the commitment of the State Government towards promoting our indigenous culture, tradition and preserving our heritage, while providing necessary support for traditional Institutions in the State, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has declared Wednesday, 20th August, 2025 as Work Free Day for Lagos State Public Servants in commemoration of the Day,” it added.
The government further directed that work would resume on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. and instructed all accounting officers to circulate the information widely within their offices.
Isese Day, derived from the Yoruba word for tradition, is observed annually to honour Yoruba cultural and spiritual heritage. It has gained formal recognition in Lagos and some other southwestern states in recent years.
