Mallam Jato Jaye, a resident of Agbaja village in Oworo, Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, has allegedly killed his 11-year-old son, Buhari Jato.
The suspect, who is currently in police custody in Lokoja, committed the crime while grazing his cattle alongside the victim in the bush.
The Guardian learnt that the crime was noticed when the mother of the victim raised an alarm when her son was discovered missing. Sympathisers within the community gathered and launched a rescue operation for the victim, tracking the local grazing routes.
The decomposing body of the 11-year-old boy was found in the bush, with the suspect trying to bury the victim to cover the crime.
The incident was promptly reported to the ‘D’ Division of the police in Lokoja, who moved to the scene and evacuated the body of the victim.
The decomposing body was later released to the family for burial after necessary documentation of the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, William Aya, confirmed the incident. When asked if it did happen as stated, the police spokesman said “yes”.
