Rough and uncertain road political office aspirants face to 2027

SIR:I have carefully watched and I am paying keen attention to the 2027 presidential election and possible candidates for the election but the situation looks scary, gloomy and a bit revolting.

On August 5, 2025, INEC in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, cautioned political parties and candidates against engaging in premature electioneering activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that such actions are in clear violation of the Electoral Act.

Today, despite his innovative ideas and massive love he’s enjoying, Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State may not get the ticket of the Labour Party (LP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and that of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he may end up not being on the ballot for the 2027 elections.

In the 2023 elections, the LP candidates held sway and Peter Obi’s charisma helped Okada riders, bus drivers and others in the lower cadre of the economy win elections, with some becoming House of Representatives members.

The fortune and others changed a few months after Senator Bola Tinubu was declared winner of the 2023 presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), sworn in and the Nigerian judiciary legitimating the declaration. While the Labour Party in 2023 presented itself as the party that cared about the plights of Nigeria, hope of the masses, it became fragmented, and many of those who rode on the back of the party to get elected appeared to be cooking for both the husband and concubine, enmeshed in crisis. Months later, majority of those who got the party tickets on the platter of gold defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

With the two gladiators, Julius Abure and Lamidi Apapa still in the Labour Party, LP may not be healed until after the Bola Tinubu presidency or after the 2027 elections.

And with Nyesome Wike in PDP and still working for Bola Tinubu and romancing the APC, Peter Obi cannot get the ticket. Atiku Abubakar’s chance of getting the ADC ticket currently appear to be the surest thing after he resigned from PDP to join the ADC.

The possible solution seems to be that Peter Obi forms another party because it seems all the political parties in Nigeria are branches of the APC.
Peter Obi could also consider becoming a running mate to Atiku Abubakar who seems to be ready to delegate more power to his deputy or treat a deputy better than how vice presidents have been treated. Vice Presidents have major roles to place. Vice President of the United States of America (USA), JD Vance is taking more roles and attending to issues that should be handled by Donald Trump.
I know that a better Nigeria is possible but when??
