Xcellon Capital Advisors Limited is a distinguished non-bank financial advisory firm specializing in investment management, corporate finance, and infrastructure advisory services across Nigeria and West Africa. Since its establishment in 2008, the firm has been guided by an unwavering commitment to prioritizing client needs, consistently delivering high-value services to a diverse range of clients. In this special publication, Dr. Chamberlain S. Peterside, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xcellon Capital Advisors, shares his insights on the company’s achievements, the challenges it has navigated, and emerging market trends, all while upholding the highest ethical standards in its operations.
Could you share the core objectives and strategic priorities of Xcellon Capital Advisor?
The core objectives and strategic priorities of Xcellon Capital Group are to build a diversified portfolio of entities that encompasses the financial services (asset management, project/infrastructure advisory and risk management), financial technology (fintech), and the real estate industries. We believe in operating these specialized entities that are led by competent teams with the requisite expertise, thereby achieving long-term value creation through the efficient deployment of human capital and technology solutions.
How has the company upheld integrity and high standards in its daily operational activities over the years?
The company has upheld integrity and high standards in its operations over the years by subscribing to and adhering to a set of ethical values embedded in our “Xcellon Principles.” These principles align with the United Nations Global Compact, in which we actively participate. They also encompass globally recognized frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Embedding environmental and social consciousness in our activities through ESG metrics is a core aspect of our ethos. We strongly advocate for gender equality, inclusivity, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) in every community where we operate.
What key strategies has Xcellon Capital Advisor employed to drive its operational success as an investment management and advisory firm?
The key strategies that have driven our success over the years include remaining laser-focused yet resilient to the economic environment’s vicissitudes. By being customer-centric and innovative, we stay focused on our long-term goals while responding to clients’ evolving needs and changing market dynamics. Given the rapid evolution of technology, shifting global geopolitics, and unstable socio-political conditions, it is imperative for us to remain vigilant, highly informed, and adaptable, tweaking our strategies as necessary.
Can you share some of the challenges the company is currently facing in the industry?
The biggest challenges our company, like any business in Nigeria, faces are market volatility, political instability, and myriads bureaucratic hurdles, which are unconducive to long-term planning. The scarcity of local talent is exacerbated by the “japa” syndrome, which doesn’t help matters. Operators must adapt their strategies and be prepared for the challenges that come with doing business in Nigeria. That said, market inefficiencies can often be a source of opportunities. We are not alone in this predicament, but we are navigating these challenges head-on and thriving despite them.
How has Xcellon Capital Advisor leveraged technology to enhance its services and improve client outcomes?
Our company leverages technology to drive operational excellence, prioritizing staying informed and ahead of the curve, as well as ensuring efficient investment decision-making. For years, we have published a daily e-newsletter that delivers market intelligence to online subscribers. Additionally, we have invested in a fintech company that provides support for POS terminals and other tools for merchants nationwide. Recognizing the transformative potential of big data and artificial intelligence (AI), we have invested in data analytics and innovative IT solutions to enhance client operations across diverse sectors.
Are there any emerging technologies or innovations that you believe will significantly impact the financial advisory industry in the coming years?
We believe that the emergence of fintech, bitcoin, cryptocurrency, distributed ledger solutions, and their growing global acceptance, as well as the tokenization of assets in the financial industry, will be a game-changer for the business environment. This transformation is driven by the power of technology. Provided that the regulatory regime fosters innovation while ensuring oversight and stability, we can expect a new era of financial inclusion, particularly among the younger generation. Nigeria is already at the forefront of this trend, attracting significant foreign direct investment (FDI) and nurturing billion-dollar companies. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) recently unveiled regulatory framework, combined with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) proactive approach to regulating the fintech sector, are strong catalysts for growth. Overall, we are optimistic about the future of Nigeria’s financial industry.
What are your projections for the future of the financial advisory industry, and how will Xcellon Capital Advisor continue to evolve and adapt?
My projections for the future of the financial industry are informed by the emergence of technology-driven products and the evolving regulatory landscape. As long as technology and regulations are synchronized, I foresee a promising outlook. At Xcellon, we are well-positioned to capitalize on these trends by investing in the right technology solutions at the right time. To achieve success, we will remain focused, resilient, and adaptable. While the path ahead may be challenging, as evidenced by our experience with some of our portfolio companies, I am confident that our commitment to innovation and perseverance will ultimately yield success. Our long-term goal is centered on creating value for all stakeholders, including investors, team members, and customers, ensuring a win-win outcome for all.
