The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down illegal herbal medicine and cosmetic factories in Kaduna and Lagos, confiscating products worth millions of naira in its ongoing clampdown on unwholesome products.
In a statement on its official X handle, the agency disclosed that enforcement officers sealed a herbal manufacturing facility in Mararaba Jos, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following credible intelligence.
The factory, it said, was operating under unhygienic and substandard conditions, with equipment that posed serious risks to public health.
Products estimated at ₦5 million and marketed under the brand name NURUL SHIFA were seized and marked for destruction, while the premises remain sealed pending further investigation.
NAFDAC stressed that the safety, quality, and efficacy of the seized products could not be guaranteed, describing them as a danger to unsuspecting consumers.
In a separate operation in Lagos, officials sealed Shine Shine Skincare, an unregistered cosmetic facility in Agege, where bleaching products falsely advertised as “organic” were being produced.
NAFDAC said its investigators revealed that the cosmetics were manufactured under poor Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) conditions and may contain harmful levels of banned substances, including corticosteroid-based bleaching agents.
The agency warned that such substances are linked to severe health complications, including skin thinning, delayed wound healing, and increased vulnerability to infections.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to exercise caution when purchasing herbal medicines and cosmetics, emphasizing that unregulated products remain a major public health risk.
It added that investigations into both factories are ongoing, with those behind the operations set to face appropriate sanctions in line with the law.
