Oyetola, STOAN laud Dantsoho’s election as IAPH VP

Nigeria’s presence in the leadership of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH) has strengthened Africa’s participation in evolving conversations on green shipping, technological transformation and the pursuit of more efficient global supply chains.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria (STOAN) made this assertion in their congratulatory messages to the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, following his election as Vice-President of the IAPH.

The IAPH is a global organisation that serves as a consultative body to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and other United Nations (UN) agencies. It unites more than 300 ports and port-related businesses across 90 countries, playing a crucial role in shaping international port policy, promoting sustainable development, and fostering collaboration on pressing industry challenges.

Oyetola described Dantsoho’s election as a global recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in maritime affairs, noting that his role within the body will be instrumental in advancing the country’s interests on the international stage.

The minister added that the development reflects the significant strides made under the Federal Government’s port modernisation programme. According to Oyetola, the ongoing port modernisation initiative is a comprehensive programme designed to overhaul infrastructure, deploy cutting-edge technology, and streamline operational processes.

He stressed that the ultimate goal is to raise Nigerian ports to international standards and position the country as a leading maritime hub in Africa.

“This election is a recognition of the ongoing reforms to reposition Nigerian ports and the Federal Government’s blue economy drive. It validates our commitment to creating a more efficient, secure, and competitive maritime environment, which is a key component of our national economic strategy,” Oyetola said.

Oyetola also expressed confidence that Dantsoho’s wealth of experience would enable him to make impactful contributions to the IAPH, elevate Nigeria’s voice in global maritime policy debates and foster deeper international collaboration.

Similarly, the Chairman of STOAN, Dr. Vicky Haastrup, described Dantsoho’s new role as a milestone that provides Nigeria with a stronger voice in shaping global port and harbour policies.

She stressed that his presence in the IAPH leadership comes at a critical time when issues of digitalisation, sustainability, and competitiveness are redefining the maritime industry.

Haastrup further assured that STOAN remains committed to supporting the NPA in deepening reforms and consolidating Nigeria’s position as the leading maritime hub in West and Central Africa.
