IBB mourns former diplomat, elder statesman Abubakar Alhaji

Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of elder statesman and former diplomat, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing his passing as a significant loss to Nigeria.

In a condolence message, Babangida extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased, the Sultan of Sokoto, and the Sokoto State Government, noting that Alhaji lived a life of service and dedication to national development.

He described the late Alhaji as an accomplished public servant, diplomat and patriot whose contributions to nation-building earned him widespread respect across the country.

According to Babangida, Alhaji’s leadership qualities and selfless commitment to public service were evident from an early age and remained hallmarks of his distinguished career.

He said the deceased approached every national assignment with diligence, integrity and a strong sense of responsibility, adding that his contributions set a standard for excellence in public service.

The former military leader also spoke of his personal relationship with the late statesman, describing the loss as deeply painful.

“To me, this is a personal loss as I have lost a friend, an associate, a confidant and a brother. All I can hold on to are the fond memories of the relationship we shared, built on trust, mutual respect and a common vision for Nigeria,” he said.

Babangida prayed for the repose of Alhaji’s soul and urged Nigerians to take solace in the legacy of service he left behind.

He also prayed for Allah to grant the deceased’s family, the people of Sokoto State and the nation the strength to bear the loss.

“May Almighty Allah grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus,” he added.
