Team Delta eyes top spot as 9th National Youth Games nears conclusion

As the 9th National Youth Games in Asaba draws to a close, the battle for supremacy on the medals table has intensified, with host team Delta State determined to reclaim its traditional dominance.

Six sporting events — badminton, athletics, wrestling, ayo, kickboxing, and abula — are yet to be concluded, leaving a significant number of medals still up for grabs and the final standings wide open.

Currently in third place, Team Delta has secured 23 gold, 27 silver, and 27 bronze medals. They trail closely behind Team Edo, who sit second with 27 gold, 11 silver, and 16 bronze medals — a slim four-gold margin separating the two rivals.

Team Lagos continues to lead the medals table with 38 gold, 18 silver, and 16 bronze medals, putting them in a strong position to finish on top.
Sports analysts, however, believe the tide could still turn in Delta’s favour. “Delta State has a very realistic chance to reclaim the top position,” one analyst said.
“They have strong competitors in athletics and combat sports, which are still ongoing. If they capitalize on their strengths, especially with home advantage, they could change the final standings.”

The closing ceremony promises to be a colourful celebration of youth talent and national unity, but the final hours of competition are shaping up to be fiercely contested.
