Nigerian Author, Chukwuemeka, launches debut novel, We Will Live Again

The Owerri chapter of the National Library of Nigeria buzzed with literary energy as readers, writers, and culture enthusiasts gathered for the official launch of We Will Live Again, the debut novel by Nigerian author Chukwuemeka Famous, published by Griots Lounge Publishing.

The event, which was held on the 25th of August, 2023, opened with a warm welcome from the library’s leadership, who framed the book launch as part of the institution’s ongoing commitment to promoting reading culture and Nigerian voices. Guests filled the main hall long before the program began, many clutching fresh copies of the book and greeting one another like old friends reunited by stories.

The launch started with opening remarks from Chukwuemeka Famous. He expressed gratitude to the community that shaped his craft and to the publishers who believed in his work. He read a brief excerpt from his book that stirred reactions from the audience. When he was done, loud applause erupted from the audience. Afterwards, a book review session followed. This session was moderated by Anthony Ukwuoma, a writer and arts journalist. During the session, Chukwuemeka Famous explained that his novel intimately explores the concept of unity and division. The book tells the story of a family of four who find themselves disintegrating gradually due to several reasons, such as religious fanaticism, politics, and war. Narrated in the first-person perspective through the eyes of the family’s firstborn, the novel takes the reader through the story of the disintegration of the family and Nigeria via the Nigerian Civil War.

Some speakers highlighted the work’s layered storytelling, its intimate feel, and also its delicate handling of the characters’ interaction with the Nigerian Civil War. One of such speakers praised the novel’s thematic relevance in today’s world, where there exist a lot of misunderstandings between family members, between groups, and even between countries.

In his speech, the publisher, Jide Aluka, spoke briefly about the editorial journey, commending the author’s discipline and the partnership that brought the manuscript to publication. He underscored the press’s mission to amplify distinct African voices, adding that We Will Live Again exemplifies their commitment to craft and cultural resonance.

In closing, the National Library of Nigeria reiterated its role as a hub for reading, research, and cultural exchange in Imo State, promising more author events and community-centred programs. The event ended with book-signing sessions and photographs with the author.
