At the TDI Tech Summit held on August 9th by The Data Immersed Community, PR strategist and founder of DGM Media, Hope Odabi, joined a panel including Judith Okechukwu, MC Monica, and media personality Nedu Wazobia to discuss the theme, “Talent is Not Enough: How Visibility, Tech, and Grit Drive the New Creative Economy.” The session examined the challenges and requirements for building sustainable careers in Africa’s creative industries.
During the discussion, Odabi emphasised that talent alone does not guarantee success. “I believe that talent is never enough. Creativity alone cannot take you far if you don’t put in the work. In today’s world, you must combine your gift with discipline, visibility, the right use of technology, and, most importantly, character. How you show up matters just as much as what you can do,” she said.
Odabi highlighted the importance of visibility, describing it as more than just being seen. “Creative professionals must consistently ‘come correct,’ showing excellence in their outlook, work ethic, and presentation,” she said. She argued that in a highly competitive environment, sustained effort and strategic self-presentation are critical for leveraging talent into opportunities.
The panel also discussed the role of grit in career development, emphasizing that perseverance and adaptability distinguish short-lived success from long-term achievement. Odabi’s remarks underscored that building a career in the modern creative economy requires a combination of technical skills, strategic visibility, and resilience.
Her contribution reinforced the broader theme of the summit: while natural talent provides the foundation, the effective use of technology, consistent self-presentation, determination, and character are essential to navigating Africa’s evolving creative landscape and turning potential into tangible success.
