For the umpteenth time, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Olayemu Cardoso, has warned citizens against abusing the Naira in the form of spraying, hawking and mutilating, saying the behaviour remains prohibited.
Cardoso, who was represented by Acting Director, Corporate Communications Department, Mrs Hakama Sidi Ali, reiterated the warning yesterday at the Central Bank Fair in Kaduna.
He said the exposition was the apex bank for the country’s sustainable economic growth and development.
Themed, “Driving Alternative Payment Channels as Tools for Financial Inclusion, Growth and Accelerated Economic Development,” the CBN boss said the topic was carefully chosen to address the links that catalyse Small, Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and other critical activities for the much-needed price stability.
He remarked: “I urge everyone here to rely only on information disseminated through the verifiable official channels of the Central Bank of Nigeria. I also encourage you to respect and keep the Naira clean. Do not spray, hawk, mutilate or counterfeit the Naira. It is our critical national symbol.”
“The core objective of this engagement, therefore, is to sensitise members of the public on how the bank’s policies enhance their lives and livelihood and contribute to the growth and development of the Nigerian economy.”
Earlier, the Kaduna Branch fair was one of the financial institution’s major public enlightenment initiatives aimed at sensitising the public on its policies, programmes, and interventions.
