Gunmen attack NUJ secretariat, police officer shot in Yobe

Suspected gunmen attacked the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Damaturu, Yobe State, on Friday, injuring a police officer on duty.

The officer sustained severe gunshot wounds and was promptly evacuated to a hospital for treatment.

Confirming the incident, NUJ Chairman Rajab Ismail Mohammed described the attack as “unfortunate and frightening” for both journalists and staff.

He noted that such an incident had not occurred in the state capital since July 2016, highlighting the psychological impact on journalists working in an environment already fraught with security challenges.

Mohammed further warned that the attack was not only an assault on a security officer but also a life-threatening intimidation against journalists operating in Damaturu and surrounding border communities, including Geidam and Yunusari.

He called on the police and other security agencies to immediately investigate the shooting and ensure the safety of media personnel in the state.
