LASUSTECH honours 59 retirees, celebrates their lasting impact

The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), recently held a colourful send-off ceremony in honour of 59 members of staff, who retired between 2022 and 2025.

The event was organised to appreciate and recognise the meritorious service of both academic and non-academic staff, whose commitment and dedication had left an enduring mark on the institution’s growth.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) (Academics), Prof. Abiodun Denloye, described the ceremony as an act of institutional gratitude.

He said retirement should not be seen as an end, but as a new phase of service to humanity, encouraging the honourees to remain active in mentorship and community engagement.

In his remarks delivered through the DVC, Prof. Odusanya highlighted the significance of institutional memory, noting that the history of LASUSTECH and its legacy institution, LASPOTECH, would be incomplete without the dedication of the retirees.

According to him, their sacrifices, especially during periods of transition, contributed immensely to the stability and steady progress of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor also pointed out that the celebration underscored LASUSTECH’s culture of respect, sacrifice, and appreciation. “By celebrating our retirees, we reinforce the values of service, integrity, and loyalty that continue to define this institution,” he said.

He concluded his remarks with prayers for the honourees’ good health, peace of mind and long life.

Delivering a goodwill message, Mrs. Morenike Makinde of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) spoke extensively about retirement benefits and opportunities available to former workers. She reassured the retirees that the Lagos State government remains committed to safeguarding their welfare and ensuring they enjoy a fulfilling life after service.

The presentation of certificates of meritorious service formed the highlight of the day. Each retiree received a certificate recognising decades of contribution to teaching, research, administration, and service. Organisers explained that this gesture was not just a formal closure to their years of work, but a lasting acknowledgement of their collective impact on the development of the university.

Registrar, Mr. David Ogungbe, in his closing remarks, praised the retirees for their loyalty, dedication, and resilience, adding that LASUSTECH must continue to build upon the strong foundation they laid. He described their service as a legacy of excellence that future generations of staff and students must emulate.

Responding on behalf of the honourees, retired Chief Lecturer and former Governing Council member of the legacy institution, Mr. Olasunkanmi Longe, expressed gratitude to the management for the unprecedented gesture. He described the event as historic, being the first of its kind in the institution, and commended the leadership for dignifying their exit while setting a noble precedent for future retirement ceremonies.

For LASUSTECH, the occasion went beyond a farewell. It was a reaffirmation of gratitude, an acknowledgement of legacy, and a demonstration of the institution’s enduring pride in those who shaped its history. The 59 retirees, comprising 36 academic and 23 non-academic staff, were celebrated for their years of meritorious service.
