Team Brazil wins E1 Lagos GP, Team Drogba takes third place

Team Brazil has secured victory at the E1 Lagos GP Championship, edging out Team Blue Rising, while Team Drogba finished in third place. The result marks a significant step for both the team and the development of electric powerboat racing in Africa.

The triumph followed a competitive qualifying session on Saturday, 4 October, in which Team Brazil claimed pole position with a combined time of 01:06.908, outperforming Team Rafa, owned by tennis player Rafael Nadal. Piloted by Timmy Hansen and Leva Millere-Hagin, Team Brazil maintained their lead throughout the main race, converting their qualifying advantage into a first-place finish.

Prior to the Lagos event, Team Rafa led the championship with 136 points, narrowly ahead of Team Brady on 135 points, while Team Brazil held 51 points. With 38 points earned from the Lagos victory, Team Brazil’s tally rose to 89 points, positioning them for the season finale in Miami next month, though they remain behind the current leaders.

E1 co-founder and CEO Rodi Basso described the reception in Lagos as remarkable, highlighting the local enthusiasm for motorsport. “The welcome we have received in Lagos has been incredible. The people and passion of Nigeria have made this historic E1 Lagos GP presented by FirstBank possible,” he said.

The Lagos race, the penultimate event of the E1 season, is the first of its kind on the African continent, enhancing Nigeria’s profile as a host of international sporting events. Launched last year in Jeddah, the E1 World Championship is the first all-electric powerboat racing series, combining technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and high-speed competition. The series was co-founded by Alejandro Agag, creator of Formula E and Extreme E, and Rodi Basso, a former Formula One engineer, with the aim of promoting cleaner marine transport through sport.
