Grammy Award-winning Nigerian afrobeats superstar, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has made history as the first African artist to headline a stadium concert in New Zealand.

The event took place on Saturday at Go Media Stadium in Auckland, where thousands of fans filled the venue to witness his debut performance in the country.

The show turned into a grand celebration of African rhythm and global unity. Backed by his full live band, Burna Boy delivered a set as fans sang along to his Afrosoul hits, “No Panic”.

Born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Damini Ogulu started his musical journey at a young age, drawing inspiration from Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

His rise to fame began in 2012 after the release of his hit single “Like to Party”, which introduced his distinctive fusion of Afrobeats, reggae, dancehall and pop.

In 2019, he won Best International Act at the BET Awards and dropped “African Giant”, the album that opened global doors for him. The project featured hits such as “Gbona”, “Anybody” and “On the Low”.

A year later, his album “Twice as Tall” earned him a Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album, making him the first Nigerian solo artiste to receive that honour.

Burna Boy has broken multiple records in recent years. In 2022, he became the first Nigerian artiste to sell out Madison Square Garden in New York, placing him among top global performers.

In 2023, he became the first African artiste to headline a UK stadium concert at the London Stadium, performing to more than 60,000 fans. The show received global praise for its scale and cultural impact.

Earlier in 2025, he also became the first Afrobeats artist to headline a stadium concert in Paris, further strengthening his position as a global artiste.
