The two-week warning strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has paralysed academic activities and disrupted final semester examinations at the Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State.
A visit to the university, our correspondent gathered, showed that the disruption has left final-year students of the institution visibly worried, while others were seen packing to their various homes, as some of the affected students were expected to complete their exams by Wednesday, October 15.
Contacted, the ASUU Federal University Dutse Chapter Chairman, Dr Salim Ahmad, said they were compelled to embark on the warning strike due to the Federal Government’s inconsistency and failure of successive administrations to abide by the 2017 agreement in meeting their demands — issues which, he said, were signed and documented between the National Union Executives and the Federal Government but to no avail.
“Every teacher wants to be in the classroom, but we are always concerned about the condition of teaching and learning,” Dr Ahmad said. “What we have been agitating for is an improvement in the conditions of our universities, which the Federal Government promised but has failed to deliver since 2017.”
Similarly, the Chairman of ASUU at Sule Lamido University (SLU), Kafin Hausa, Dr Mustapha Hussain, confirmed that the institution has joined the nationwide warning strike.
According to the chairman, they joined the strike both as members of ASUU and out of concern for the urgent need to improve the conditions of Nigerian universities for them to maintain global standards.
