The Arewa PDP Unity Forum (APUF) has condemned the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ibrahim Abdullahi, for what it described as “reckless and disrespectful comments” directed at former Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
In a statement issued on Friday and signed by its National President, Dr Maikanti Adamu, the Forum said Abdullahi’s remarks, made during a recent television appearance, were unbecoming of a senior party official and detrimental to the PDP’s internal unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adamu described Abdullahi’s comments as “both unfortunate and unnecessary,” noting that describing a two-term governor who helped deliver his state for the PDP as someone “carrying a bag” for anyone was insulting, not only to Ugwuanyi but also to the party’s legacy.
He stated that Ugwuanyi’s leadership and quiet diplomacy during the 2023 elections were instrumental in maintaining the PDP’s foothold in the South-East at a time when the party suffered losses elsewhere.
“While many states slipped from PDP control, Enugu stood firm under Ugwuanyi’s leadership. Those who could not even hold their local governments for the party should be the last to question his loyalty or stature,” Adamu said.
The Forum cautioned that the public denigration of respected party figures undermines the PDP’s collective image and could worsen divisions within its ranks.
“Our national officers should act as unifiers, not purveyors of insult. If we continue ridiculing our own, how do we expect Nigerians to take us seriously as a government-in-waiting?” Adamu asked.
He urged the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) to caution its spokespersons against making statements that trivialise the sacrifices of former governors, legislators, and other party elders who have contributed to the party’s longevity.
“The PDP has endured for more than two decades because it accommodates diverse voices. The Deputy National Publicity Secretary should focus on strengthening structures that win elections, not attacking those who already have,” the statement read.
The Forum reaffirmed its respect for the party’s founding members and senior figures nationwide, describing them as “living pillars of the PDP whose experience and loyalty must never be discarded for the sake of media soundbites.”
