#FreeNnamdiKanu: Sowore walking a fine line – Tinubu’s aide

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, on Monday warned that activist Omoyele Sowore is walking a fine line over the ongoing #FreeNnamdiKanu protest taking place across Abuja.

Dare condemned the protest, describing it as an action that undermines the rule of law and disrupts judicial processes. He said the agitation around the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was being fuelled by reckless and counterproductive behaviour.

In a post on X, the former Minister of Youth and Sports Development cautioned that street demonstrations and inflammatory rhetoric could create unnecessary tension around the ongoing court case.

“Matters of justice are resolved in courts, not on the streets or through bravado and hysteria. The Sowore pastime of PR agitation and courting of public sympathy to interfere with judicial proceedings is outdated and counterproductive in a modern democracy,” Dare said.

He accused Sowore of attempting to influence judicial outcomes through public agitation, noting that such behaviour would not be tolerated in Europe or America.

Dare further explained that Kanu’s case predated President Tinubu’s administration and remained entirely under the jurisdiction of the judiciary.

“Freedom and democracy have their limits. Testing these limits will invite the full application of the laws as clearly stated. On this one, Sowore is walking a fine line,” he warned.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to due process, Dare said President Tinubu’s administration respects the independence of the judiciary and remains dedicated to justice, transparency, and the rule of law.

“President Tinubu remains committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice is served fairly and transparently,” he concluded.

Earlier, police reportedly dispersed protesters near the Transcorp Hilton in Maitama, Abuja, using tear gas on demonstrators, including Mr Sowore.

The protest caused heavy traffic disruptions across parts of the Central Business District and the Three Arms Zone as security operatives mounted roadblocks to contain the rallies.
