Crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Monday as its National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, insisted that his signature was forged on the official letter notifying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the party’s forthcoming national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

However, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) dismissed the forgery allegation, describing it as “spurious, mischievous and false.”

Addressing journalists in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, maintained that Senator Anyanwu personally signed all letters related to the forthcoming national convention, including the one to INEC, in the full glare of party leaders, state governors, and members of the NWC.

According to Ologunagba, the letters were signed hours before the 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on August 25, in the presence of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, former Minister of Special Duties Tanimu Turaki, and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, among others.

He explained that Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, even confirmed during the NEC meeting that all necessary documents, including the letter to INEC, had been duly signed by the National Secretary.
“Senator Anyanwu wrote four letters in furtherance of the agreement reached at NEC meetings 101 and 102. He actively participated in activities towards the elective convention,” Ologunagba stated.

He, however, urged the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to investigate what he described as a “false claim of forgery,” warning that if the allegation is found to be untrue, the party would have no choice but to sanction Anyanwu for misconduct.
“None of the security agencies petitioned has invited any PDP leader for questioning. The PDP remains focused on the national convention despite the bricks and rocks being thrown at us. The party has the strength and internal capacity to weather this storm,” Ologunagba declared.

Anyanwu’s petition adds to the growing internal tension in the PDP as the party struggles to unify its ranks ahead of the November convention, expected to produce a new National Working Committee.

Anyanwu, who described the development as “criminal and shocking,” had said he neither signed nor authorised the said letter, and has consequently petitioned the INEC Chairman, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Inspector-General of Police, demanding a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for what he called the “forgery and cloning” of his signature.

He maintained that the only letters he signed recently were those relating to the conduct of PDP congresses in Anambra, Ebonyi and the South East zone. “I did not sign any letter concerning the conduct of the national convention,” he stressed in a brief telephone interview with The Guardian.

Anyanwu further disclosed that Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who chairs the PDP National Convention Organising Committee, had “begged” him to take certain actions regarding the convention but that he declined, insisting that he was not part of the arrangements.
