Daniel Akanbi: Driving digital transformation, business strategy in FMCG sector

Daniel Akanbi

As Africa’s consumer goods markets shift rapidly, global companies face pressure to modernise operations while remaining grounded in local realities. Daniel Akanbi has emerged as a transformative leader driving this shift by defining how multinationals integrate digital strategy and operational efficiency across emerging markets. His work has drawn attention from peers and industry observers for pioneering scalable, inclusive, and tech-driven models that bridge Africa’s informal retail sector.

During his tenure with Procter & Gamble Nigeria, Akanbi played a pivotal role in transforming how the company and consumer goods sector approached distribution in the informal retail market, which represents nearly 98 per cent of national trade. His leadership coincided with a defining moment for African commerce regarding the rise of e-commerce, data-driven logistics, and the push toward digital inclusion.

As Regional Sales Manager, Akanbi recognised that fragmented distribution networks, poor visibility, and high logistics costs were not simply company-level issues but national economic constraints. In response, he spearheaded a digital transformation initiative that has since become a model for efficiency and inclusion across the FMCG sector. He led the rollout of a sales force automation platform that digitally onboarded more than 100,000 informal trade stores across Nigeria. By capturing real-time sales and GPS data, he developed optimised distribution routes that reduced fuel costs, improved last-mile delivery, and expanded access to essential goods in hard-to-reach communities.

Akanbi designed and deployed a centralised business intelligence system that empowered over 5,000 SME employees with real-time visibility across the supply chain. His innovation improved decision-making, transparency, and efficiency. He also introduced predictive analytics to help distributors and retailers optimise inventory, reduce waste, and improve cash flow for SMEs.

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought global supply chains to a halt, Daniel Akanbi’s digital framework ensured the uninterrupted delivery of essential goods across Nigeria. The value of these systems became even clearer as other multinational firms across Nigeria sought to replicate his model to strengthen their own resilience. His strategies became a blueprint for Nigeria’s wider supply chain modernisation efforts, influencing how multinational companies, SMEs, and policymakers design distribution networks.

Akanbi’s influence continues to grow. He is set to take on a leadership role with Procter & Gamble in South Africa, a market shaped by modern trade networks, higher digital adoption, and stronger regulations compared to Nigeria’s predominantly informal retail system. His new assignment will involve adapting operational strategies to a more structured and competitive environment, where efficiency gains are harder to achieve but essential for business growth.

Akanbi’s expertise in Business Operations Strategy stands as a benchmark for innovation in the FMCG sector. His initiatives have reshaped how multinationals think about distribution, data, and resilience in emerging markets, making him one of the defining figures in the FMCG sector.
