122,050 displaced children back to school in three N’West states, says SCI

Aliyu vows to revamp Sokoto economy

Save the Children International (SCI) has confirmed enrolling no fewer than 122,050 children affected by insecurity and related challenges in Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara states back to school.

Its SCI Project Manager, Mrs Altine Lew, who disclosed the project performance review, said the enrolment was made possible through the Education Cannot Wait (ECW) project.

Lew said the children, who are within the age bracket of six to 18 years, were also supported with literacy and numeracy programmes, as well as uniforms, bags and related school items.   She said the exercise marks a major milestone in the organisation’s effort to reduce the number of out-of-school children in the Northwest region.

“Save the Children, with support from Education Cannot Wait, has enrolled 122,050 learners into school and supported them with literacy and numeracy skills to help them reintegrate fully into formal education. We are ensuring that every child affected by the crisis gets a second chance to learn,” Lew said.

She observed that the project, which runs from October 2024 to February 2026, targets children who have been displaced by insecurity and related challenges in the region.

She said the programme seeks to provide inclusive, quality education and protection services to ensure that every child, regardless of gender or disability, has access to safe learning environments.

Lew also said SCI is working closely with the Federal Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs), and community-based organisations to strengthen systems for sustainability and local ownership.

THIS comes as Governor Ahmad Aliyu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to make Sokoto State economically vibrant through various reforms and development initiatives. He made the vow while declaring open the 12th Regular Executive Council Meeting for the year 2025.

Aliyu reiterated his commitment to sustaining the people-centred projects currently being executed across the state, noting that they are designed to improve the living standards of citizens.

The governor also restated his administration’s commitment to addressing the security challenges affecting parts of the state through continuous collaboration with security agencies. He sought the support and cooperation of all well-meaning citizens to enable the government to achieve its development goals.

Aliyu further commended members of the State Executive Council (SEC) for their positive contributions, which he said had contributed greatly to the successes achieved so far.
