Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has announced mass metering across its franchise areas in Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states under the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP), a $500 million World Bank-funded initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s power distribution chain.
According to the company, the exercise represents a significant step in its efforts to close the metering gap, eliminate estimated billing, and improve operational efficiency.
No fewer than 128,000 prepaid meters are to be installed at no cost to customers as part of the initiative.
KEDCO’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Abubakar Jimeta, said the metering drive aligns with the company’s transformation agenda, which focuses on service improvement, customer satisfaction, and financial sustainability.
His words: “The metering initiative is not just about installing devices; it’s about improving service delivery, customer satisfaction, and financial sustainability for the betterment of the power sector.”
Jimeta explained that the exercise would prioritise existing unmetered customers and replacement of faulty meters in line with a structured and transparent metering plan, while new service connections will continue to follow the existing Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework.
He stressed that the DISREP meters are completely free, warning customers not to make any payment to KEDCO staff or agents for the facilities or installations.
He also appealed to customers to extend their full cooperation to ensure a smooth and transparent implementation of the project across the designated areas.
The DISREP initiative, backed by the World Bank, aims to enhance the financial and technical performance of the nation’s electricity distribution companies by implementing large-scale procurement and installation of advanced prepaid meters and Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS).
Through the programme, KEDCO said it aims to achieve full metering coverage, boost transparency in billing, and enhance reliability in power distribution to customers across its operational states.
