Ethiopian Airlines increases frequencies to 34 in five Nigerian routes

Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier of Ethiopia, has expanded its weekly frequencies to four Nigerian airports, bringing the total to 34, making it the airline with the highest number of flights into Nigeria.

The latest addition is the introduction of three additional weekly frequencies at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), bringing the total to 10 flights per week.

In July of this year, the airline increased its weekly frequencies to Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, to 14 from the initial seven.

With the addition of new flights, Ethiopian Airlines has strengthened its Nigerian footprint with a total of 34 weekly flights, comprising 14 from Lagos, five each from Kano and Enugu, and 10 from Abuja.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja, the Area Manager of Ethiopian Airlines Nigeria, Firiehewot Mekonnen, said that the airline was not only adding another flight, but also celebrating a deeper partnership, a stronger connection, and a shared journey between Ethiopia and Nigeria.

She described the new service as historic, recalling that Ethiopian Airlines, about 65 years ago, became one of the first international carriers to fly to Nigeria, starting operations to Lagos shortly after the country’s independence in 1960.

She expressed delight that since its inaugural flight into Nigeria in 1960, the airline had grown by expanding its network to Lagos, Abuja, Enugu, and Kano, serving millions of Nigerian passengers.

She added: “Today, we mark yet another milestone, the start of a second frequency to Abuja, the Capital of Nigeria. This development symbolises our continued commitment to strengthening the deep-rooted ties between Ethiopia and Nigeria and supporting Nigeria’s position as a leading aviation and economic hub in Africa.
“Our partnership with Nigeria has always been symbiotic, built on mutual respect, shared vision, and trust. We love Nigeria, and Nigerians have always loved Ethiopian Airlines.
“Together, we have connected Nigeria to over 150 global destinations through our Addis Ababa hub, using one of the youngest and most modern fleets in the world, including the Airbus A350-1000 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.”

Mekonnen pointed out that the new service, ET 957, would depart Abuja at 10:00 p.m. and arrive in Addis Ababa at 5:00 a.m., providing faster and more convenient connections to key African and Asian destinations, including Dubai, Tel Aviv, São Paulo, Johannesburg, Nairobi, and beyond.
