Former champions, Enyimba, are in dire straits. The Peoples Elephant have been on a three-game losing streak, which has seen them diving from the second spot on the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) to the 10th with 13 points out of a possible 30 in the 10-week-old season.
The team, once revered as Africa’s number side following their back-to-back CAF Champions League triumphs in the 2003 and 2004 seasons, have become so poor that they have been losing games, even at home, to such sides as Warri Wolves, Plateau United and Kun Khalifat.
Their last defeat away to Plateau United last week forced the team’s management to issue a two-match win ultimatum to Coach Stanley Eguma. This weekend in Aba, the Peoples Elephant will host another fallen giants, Kano Pillars, in a game that could define Eguma’s continued stay in the Enyimba city.
Enyimba, in the ultimatum to Eguma, charged the technical crew to secure positive results in the next two fixtures against Kano Pillars in Aba this weekend and Abia Warriors in Umuahia next week.
The club said: “While we acknowledge the efforts of the technical crew so far, the current run of results does not reflect the club’s ambition.
“We expect an immediate response and improved performance beginning with Sunday’s home fixture against Kano Pillars.”
Eguma is not the type of coach to fret under the current pressure as he has seen all there is in the NPFL and knows what to do to turn the tide.
But against a Kano Pillars side also desperate for a change in fortune, the former Rovers United coach has a tough task ahead on Sunday.
Elsewhere, round of 11 matches will begin today in Benin, where Bendel Insurance will host Warri Wolves and Ilorin, venue of the game between Kwara United and Remo Stars.
Tomorrow will see Barau FC hosting Wikki Tourists in Kano, Bayelsa United against Plateau United in Yenagoa, El Kanemi against Enugu Rangers Maiduguri and Ikorodu City against Kun Khalifa at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
Other Week 11 games tomorrow will see Niger Tornadoes at home to second-placed Abia Warriors, Rivers United against league leaders, Nasarawa United in Port Harcourt and Shooting Stars against Katsina United in Ibadan.
