Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon set to renew rivalry at West Africa Para Games

Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon’s sports rivalry will again come to the fore at the maiden West Africa Zones A & B Para Games, holding in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The championship began yesterday and will run to December 4, 2025.

Already, a large delegation of athletes and officials from Ghana, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Togo and Niger Republic arrived in the country yesterday night and were expected to move into the Games Village in Abeokuta ahead of today’s opening ceremony.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), former Baseball and Softball player, Victor Achakpo, told The Guardian, yesterday, that the delegation from Cote d’Ivoire is expected to arrive in Lagos by flight today.

“The flight itinerary by Cote d’Ivoire is already confirmed, and we have our people at the airport to receive them on arrival tomorrow (today), he said.

Achakpo, who is the current first vice president of the Baseball and Softball Federation of Nigeria, hinted that all arrangements to make the maiden West Africa Zone A & B Para Games successful had been put in place.

According to him, all 13 members of the LOC put in place by the National Sports Commission (NSC) are already in Abeokuta working with officials of the Ogun State government ahead of the opening ceremony.

Also speaking on arrangements for the Games, President of Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode, revealed yesterday that the president of the Africa Paralympic Committee, Sampson Deen, a Ghanaian, is among the top dignitaries expected to grace the occasion.

Odebode stated that 12 events, including Para Athletics, Para Swimming, Para Powerlifting, Para Table Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball 3×3, Sitting Volleyball, Amputee Football, Para Canoeing, Wheelchair Tennis, Para Badminton, Para Arm-Wrestling and Para Shooting, will feature in the games.
