NNPCL-Heirs Energies JV boosts gas supply, power generation

Nigeria’s domestic gas supply and electricity generation have received a major boost as the NNPCL/Heirs Energies OML 17 Joint Venture (JV) announced a landmark breakthrough through the innovative and rigless recompletion of a key non-associated gas well in OML 17.

The pioneering intervention has doubled the JV’s gas production to a peak of 135 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscf/d), significantly strengthening national energy security.

Besides, the increased gas output is already reshaping power generation across the eastern corridor. Transcorp Plc‘s TransAfam Power, one of Nigeria’s major power plants, has quadrupled its generation capacity, rising from an average of 50 megawatts to more than 180 megawatts, with occasional peaks of 200 megawatts. Other power stations supplied by the network, including First Independent Power Limited (FIPL) and Geometric Power, have also recorded more stable operations and improved output.

Overall, the power plants receiving gas from the JV have collectively grown their generation from roughly 100 megawatts to over 350 megawatts, supplying enough electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. The development has reduced blackout levels, improved supply to hospitals and schools, and supported factories, SMEs, and critical infrastructure across the region.

The achievement has attracted commendation at the highest levels of government. In a letter addressed to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Heirs Energies, Osa Igiehon, Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen, praised the milestone.

She gave the assurance of continued support from the Federal Government, saying: “Please be assured of continued support as you expand your operation across the energy sector, unlocking additional oil and gas resources to power homes, industries and commercial activities nationwide.”

Also, Executive Vice President, Upstream, NNPC Ltd., Udy Ntia, commended the success, stating: “This innovative intervention demonstrates NNPCL’s strong commitment to unlocking the nation’s gas resources in support of national development.

Similarly, Chief Upstream Investment Officer, NUIMS, Seyi Omotowa, said Heirs Energies, through its ongoing partnership with the NNPCL, would continue to push gas-focused, innovation-led development intended to expand domestic supply, fortify electricity generation, and support industrial and economic growth. However, Igiehon described the accomplishment as proof of the company’s strengthened ability to rejuvenate brownfield assets.
