Teen driver rams Edo checkpoint, injures three police officers

The Edo State Police Command has issued a warning to motorists and members of the public following an incident in which three officers were knocked down at a checkpoint in Benin City.

The incident occurred on December 24, 2025, along Iyekogba Estate Gate. Police sources said a motorist, reportedly driving against traffic, breached the checkpoint barricade and deliberately rammed into the officers, injuring three of them before continuing his erratic drive and colliding with other vehicles. The suspect was eventually restrained and arrested.

The injured personnel were taken to a medical facility, where they are receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, said motorists had been repeatedly advised to slow down and comply with lawful checks. “There is absolutely no justifiable reason for any motorist to speed through a police checkpoint except with the intention to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers,” he stated.

Preliminary investigations identified the driver as Nsikak Okon, 19, an unlicensed motorist. Police said a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV valued at approximately ₦28 million, unregistered and in use since May 2024, was recovered from him. A search also led to the seizure of a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud, as well as a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid believed to be diluted refnol.

CP Agbonika said investigations were ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s actions and any potential criminal intent. He warned that attacks on police officers would no longer be tolerated. “Any person who deliberately attacks or attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will not be spared. Enough is enough,” he said, adding that the command remained committed to maintaining law and order across Edo State.
