MPB chairman visits late Head of State Gen. Murtala’s orderly

The Chairman of the Military Pension Board (MPB), Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem, has paid a visit to the orderly of the late Head of State, Gen. Murtala Ramat Mohammed, Master Warrant Officer Michael Etuwe.

The MPB chairman visited Etuwe at his residence in Masaka, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, on Monday, according to a statement by the board’s Public Relations Officer, Squadron Leader Aliyu Mohammed.
Master Warrant Officer Etuwe served closely with the late General Murtala Ramat Mohammed during a defining era in Nigeria’s history.

Etuwe was on duty as an orderly to Gen. Murtala and was in his official vehicle on 13 February 1976, when the Head of State was assassinated in Lagos.

Mohammed said the orderly’s service placed him among the living witnesses to one of the most significant moments in Nigeria’s national history.

He added that the visit served as a symbolic recognition of distinguished military service and a tribute to veterans whose dedication and sacrifices contributed significantly to the defence and stability of the nation.

The chairman reaffirmed the board’s commitment to the welfare, dignity and continued engagement of military veterans, stressing that their sacrifices remain an enduring pillar of Nigeria’s peace and national development.

In his remarks, Etuwe expressed delight at the visit, describing it as a rare and meaningful honour.
He conveyed his heartfelt appreciation to the Chairman of the Military Pensions Board and members of the veterans’ community for the recognition and show of solidarity.

Also in attendance were representatives of various veterans’ associations, as well as members of the Ministerial Committee on Veterans’ Welfare.

The stakeholders commended the chairman for his leadership and commitment to veterans’ affairs, describing the engagement as timely and deeply reassuring to the retired military community.

The visit reflected mutual respect, reinforcing the shared responsibility of preserving the legacy and wellbeing of those who served the nation with courage and loyalty.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has urged troops of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to remain disciplined, committed and professional, stressing that their role in addressing security challenges on the Plateau is critical to national stability.

He gave the charge on Monday during his operational visit to 3 Division, Nigerian Army, in Jos.
Shaibu told the troops that discipline remains the bedrock of the military profession, noting that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and rooted in the noble cause of defending the nation’s territorial integrity.
