VC tasks new nurses on innovation, professional ethics

The Vice-Chancellor, Atiba University, Oyo (AUO), Prof. Sunday Okeniyi, has urged the newly certified Nursing Science graduates of the institution to harness innovation responsibly, leveraging knowledge and technology to enhance patient care without compromising compassion.

Addressing the graduating students at the third Nursing Science induction and award ceremony, themed: ‘Nursing in a dynamic world: Innovation, integrity and impact,’ Okeniyi emphasised the imperative of ethical conduct and professional excellence.

He noted that the graduands’ journey to this milestone was shaped by discipline, sacrifice, intellectual rigour, and character formation, preparing them for the significant responsibility of preserving life, restoring hope, and defending human dignity.

He stressed that nursing is a dynamic profession, constantly evolving in response to global health challenges and technological advancements, requiring the combination of clinical competence with innovative solutions to complex health problems.

On his part, the vice-chancellor disclosed that the institution Atiba has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence postgraduate programmes, including Nursing, Business Administration, Public Administration, Computer Science, Political Science, International Relations, Economics, Sociology, and English, marking a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to advancing health sciences education, research, and professional leadership.

Founder and President of Atiba University, Dr James Ojebode, reminded the graduands that integrity is their greatest professional asset, urging them to prioritise honesty, discipline, and respect in their practice.

He described nursing as a profession demanding service before self, compassion before comfort, and responsibility before recognition, encouraging the graduating students to let their work reflect excellence, kindness, and responsibility. Bukola Oladipupo emerged the best graduating student of the year, and received an award for her academic excellence.

The ceremony was a testament to the university’s commitment to producing well-rounded nursing professionals equipped with both scientific knowledge and humanistic qualities essential for ethical and effective nursing care.

He reiterated the university’s vision to equip students with both sound scientific knowledge and humanistic qualities essential for ethical and effective nursing care, while Ojebode lauded the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) for its role in regulating the profession.
 
“Your impact will extend far beyond hospital walls. You will influence families, inspire communities, and sometimes be the only voice of comfort in moments of fear and pain. Let integrity, innovation, and compassion guide you,” the founder added.
