The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a violent attack on a traditional ruler in Khana Local Government Area of the state, after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle and left him injured.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m., when the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, His Royal Majesty, King T.Y. Baridam, was returning from a meeting in neighbouring Okwale Community.

According to a report made by the monarch at the police station, his convoy came under sudden attack along Tekar Sogho Road, a route leading to the East–West Road in Khana LGA.

He told police that armed men, who had reportedly lain in wait in nearby bushes, emerged and opened fire on his black Toyota Prado.

The attack resulted in extensive damage to the vehicle, with bullets shattering the windscreen and other parts of the car. During the gunfire, King Baridam sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh.

He was immediately taken to a medical facility and is currently receiving treatment. Police authorities have not disclosed further details about his condition but confirmed that he is responding to care.

In response to the attack, the Rivers State Police Command said patrol teams were swiftly deployed to the area to comb surrounding communities and forested routes in an effort to track down the assailants.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, who confirmed the incident in a press statement issued on Monday, said investigations were ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

“The Rivers State Police Command assures the public that no stone will be left unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.

The police also called on residents of Khana and adjoining communities to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid the investigation.

The attack has heightened security concerns in the area, particularly given the status of the victim as a traditional ruler, and comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb violent crimes and attacks on public figures in Rivers State.

As investigations continue, police authorities say they will provide updates as more facts emerge.
