Barrister Aloy Ejimakor has said the Monday sit-at-home observed in the Southeast is evidence of how unhappy Igbo people are concerning the travails of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu is currently serving a life sentence in a prison in Sokoto State for terrorism, after a long period in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Since his extraction from Kenya, Igbos in the Southeast have adhered to a sit-at-home order observed every Monday. Despite IPOB halting the order, people in the region continue to observe it, especially since Kanu has yet to regain his freedom.

On Monday, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State visited Onitsha Market, where he warned that if traders continue to obey the sit-at-home order, his government will be forced to shut down the market for a month.

He said, “This whole area, we are going to cordone it off in the first instance for just one week. If we come on Monday and it is locked, and no shop is open, we will lock it up for one month.

“Wherever you come from, Anambra is open to everybody. Everybody is welcome to trade in Anambra. If you must trade here, you must abide by the rules, and the rules are that markets are open from Mondays to Saturdays. If you are not prepared to open your shops from Monday to Saturday, then leave Anambra, go elsewhere.

“This market will be shut down for the remainder of this week. It will not be open on Monday through to Friday. It will open again on Monday.”

Reacting, Aloy Ejimakor, who served as a counsel to Kanu, said the fact that people still obey the lifted sit-at-home order is evidence of how unhappy they are with his client’s incarceration.

He shared on X, “This truth is self-evident: The Monday SIT AT HOME in Southeast is the best evidence of how unhappy Ndigbo are over the travails of MAZI NNAMDI KANU & it will persist until he’s freed. And this: The #SitAtHome has reached a point where no Executive Order can end it; but it will end instantly on its own once #MNK is freed.”
