The Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Corruption Committee (NBAA-CC) has reaffirmed its commitment to the fight against corruption, rule of law, and institutional accountability, while expressing deep concern over unresolved, high-profile corruption cases involving legal practitioners.
Chairman NBAA-CC, Prof. Babafemi Badejo, made this known yesterday at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in Abuja as part of its resolve to build a Nigeria defined not by the weight of corruption, but by the strength of its institutions and the integrity of its professionals in the legal sector.
“The import of this for our nation is profound. It is a declaration that the guardians of the law and the fighters of corruption are now formally aligned in purpose, strategy, and resolve. It is a promise to the Nigerian people that we are building a united front, one dedicated to nurturing a future where transparency, accountability, and the rule of law are the undeniable pillars of our society,” he said.
The first MoU commits both institutions to joint action in promoting professional integrity within the legal profession, enhancing capacity building, driving public awareness, and advocating for sound policy reforms.
The second MoU, with ICPC’s Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, deepens the alliance by focusing on the foundational tools of change: education, training, and research. It provides a structured pathway for developing and delivering anti-corruption curricula, conducting joint research, and executing both paid and free certificate programs for lawyers and allied professionals. It is an agreement to build knowledge, shape minds, and instill ethical standards from the classroom to the courtroom.
ICPC chairman, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, said the initiative is a deliberate response to the call for collective action against corruption. “The ICPC, therefore, receives this MoU with the NBA as a strategic alliance anchored in shared values: the supremacy of the rule of law, professional ethics, accountability, and service to the Nigerian people.
The NBA, as an umbrella professional body of all lawyers in Nigeria, and the ICPC, as a statutory anti-corruption body, are natural partners in the quest to strengthen our justice system and restore public confidence in governance,” he said.
