FG to arraign suspects over Yelewata killings Monday

IGP Kayode Egbetokun

Barring any last-minute hitches, the Federal Government has confirmed that suspects arrested in connection with the deadly Yelewata attack in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State will be arraigned in court on Monday.

The June 2025 attack, allegedly carried out by suspected criminal herders, left more than 100 people dead, triggering widespread outrage and calls for justice.

Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced the arrest of 28 suspects after coordinated investigations by security agencies.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Kamarudeen Ogundele, Senior Assistant to the President on Communication and Publicity in the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, said the suspects would be charged before Justice Joyce Abdul-Malik of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Ogundele said the arraignment followed a “painstaking investigation and close inter-agency collaboration,” underscoring the government’s determination to hold those responsible accountable.

He assured Nigerians that justice would be served, noting that the prosecution is intended to send a strong message to individuals and groups threatening national peace and security under any guise.

“The Federal Government remains resolute in its commitment to the protection of lives and property,” the statement said, adding that the move aligns with constitutional provisions and the administration’s broader security agenda.

Ogundele reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration will continue to confront violent crimes decisively and ensure that perpetrators of mass atrocities face the full weight of the law.
