A coalition of youth groups in the Niger Delta has attributed a noticeable reduction in insecurity and community tensions in parts of the region to the ongoing construction of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.

They described the project as a catalyst for socioeconomic prosperity and sustainable peace,

The youths, operating under the aegis of the Amalgamation of Niger Delta Community Youth Leaders (ANDCYL), stated this after an inspection tour of sections within the Esit Eket Community linking Uruakok and Akpa Utong villages; Urue Offong Local Government Area connecting Ikpe Oron Community; and Okobo LGA linking Udung Uloh and Afaha Akai communities.

Speaking during the tour, the group’s spokesperson, comrade Isaac Okon, highlighted the economic and strategic importance of the coastal highway, describing it as a transformative project capable of redefining Nigeria’s infrastructure landscape and accelerating economic growth.

According to him, the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Road, awarded by the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ranks among the most ambitious infrastructure projects in Nigeria’s recent history.

“This landmark initiative is a blessing to the nation. Many of us thought the project existed only on paper, but today, even the blind can attest to the level of progress already achieved,” he stated.

Okon further noted that Hitech Construction Company is working round the clock, adding that the scale of the construction, particularly the eight-lane carriageway, underscores the enormity of the project, with additional forest areas still being cleared.

In separate remarks, Comrade Albert Monday Isanghedighe, a leader from Akpa Utong Community, and comrade Saviour John Asawana, a stakeholder representing Afaha Akai Community, applauded the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the supervising Ministry of Works for their support and oversight in ensuring the project’s success.

They particularly praised Hitech Engineering Company for its professionalism in human resource management and adherence to international infrastructure standards.

The stakeholders also expressed satisfaction with the community-engagement strategy adopted by the Project Manager, Engr. Joseph Matah, especially in the areas of youth employment and continuous engagement with local leaders.

“The impact of this project is already evident. Youths are meaningfully engaged, local economies are thriving, and the communities are experiencing renewed hope. This clearly shows that the government has the people at heart,” they said.

They noted that upon completion, the highway would significantly open up the region, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and enhance local commerce.

“Despite the heavy rains experienced in the latter part of 2025, the progress recorded in 2026 is commendable. This demonstrates the contractor’s resilience and commitment,” they added.

The youth leaders further described the project as a catalyst for socioeconomic prosperity, sustainable peace, and long-term development, stressing that increased youth engagement has already contributed to reduced insecurity and community tensions.

They commended the Federal Government for initiating the project, noting that their communities are now firmly placed on the national development map, with renewed prospects for recognition, inclusion, and growth
