To Organise 1st Intercollegiate Games
Niger State Sports Commission has threatened to withdraw Niger Tornadoes Football Club from the ongoing National Premier League (NPFL) over ‘unfair and unjust treatment’ of the Club.
The Commission’s Chairman, Danjuma Abdullahi Masu, described rescheduling of Tornadoes matches to other states as politically motivated, personal and for selfish interests, calling for its reversal of such decision because the identified problem unfriendly camera viewing of matches which can be solved in a week.
He insisted that the Niger State stadium is far better than 10 other stadia in the country, adding that playing politics in sporting business is unacceptable and should be discouraged in the system by putting their house to enhance sports development in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Niger State Sports Commission is set to organise its maiden Inter collegiate sports competitions involving all tertiary institutions. It will commence from February 9, 2026 in Minna, Niger State capital.
The Commission’s Chairman, Danjuma Abdullahi Masu, gave the hint while speaking to journalists in Minna, saying that 11 higher institutions are to participate in the festival aimed at uniting the students and hunting talents to bring out the best in them for each sport.
Masu noted that over 500 registered athletes are to participate in the competition in about 11 sports to include all the racket games, all the combat sports, football, volleyball, basketball, handball, chase as well as Scrabble games.
Masu assured that the commission will sustain its partnership with the media for marketing, advocacy and publicity, revealing that seven universities are participating with other tertiary institutions in Niger state.
The Chairman reiterated the unwavering commitment of the commission to ensure proper registration of participation, which is free, as measures have been put in place to ensure transparency in the system.
While appreciating Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for creating enabling environment for sports to thrive in the state, he also commended the team spirit of the management as well as individuals who donated medical drugs for the competition and encourage private sector participation in sports development in the state.
He further disclosed that four trophies have been made available with medals for the participants, adding that the overall school winner will go home with the giant trophy, the first position, second runner and third runner will be rewarded with trophies each, while others will get silver and browns as well as sports wears, noting that the best athlete for each sport will be invited for the National Sports Festival scheduled for Enugu State, this year.
