The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed a fatal road accident involving a DAF articulated truck and a cyclist beneath the LASUTH Bridge at the traffic signal corridor inward Airport Road, Ikeja.
The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary findings showed that both the cyclist and the articulated truck were approaching the roundabout under the bridge from the Maryland axis at the same time. He stated that the cyclist failed to maintain a safe distance from the moving truck while negotiating the roundabout, resulting in a fatal collision that left the cyclist dead at the scene.
Taofiq disclosed that LASTMA operatives on duty at the location responded promptly, took control of the situation and apprehended the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee. The suspect has since been handed over to officers of the Ikeja Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
To prevent secondary accidents and restore the free flow of traffic, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit were invited to evacuate the remains of the deceased cyclist from the roadway.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and urged cyclists and commercial motorbike riders to be more safety-conscious while using Lagos roads. He reiterated that cyclists must obey traffic regulations and avoid expressways, highways and other major roads where the risk of accidents is significantly higher.
Taofiq added that the Lagos State Government had continued its public sensitisation campaigns to educate cyclists and other vulnerable road users on restricting their movement to inner roads and avoiding high-risk corridors.
He reaffirmed that the government, through LASTMA, remains committed to strict traffic enforcement, sustained public enlightenment and the protection of all road users, urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to comply fully with traffic laws to prevent avoidable loss of life.
