The February edition of the Laterna Book Club’s Review of the Month brought together writers, policy thinkers and readers in Victoria Island, Lagos, for a discussion centred on governance, leadership and public life.
The session, held on Thursday, 12 February 2026, featured Reuben Abati and Kikelomo Atanda-Owo, whose recent works explore Nigeria’s political and institutional landscape.
Moderated by writer and filmmaker Moyin Ezekiel, the event examined Abati’s Portraits and Atanda-Owo’s Encounters: Governance, Policy & Society, both of which are positioned within contemporary Nigerian nonfiction.
Abati’s Portraits, a 642-page collection, draws from four decades of commentary on Nigerian and global politics, culture and public affairs. The book combines reflective essays with historical references and literary analysis, offering insight into public institutions and leadership trends.
Atanda-Owo’s Encounters presents interviews and conversations with key figures in governance and business, including Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Babatunde Fashola, and Allen Onyema. Through these exchanges, the book explores policy decisions, reform efforts and the broader social context shaping leadership in Nigeria.
Abati, a former presidential spokesman and Chairman of The Guardian Editorial Board, currently serves as co-anchor of The Morning Show and anchor of ThisDay Live on ARISE TV. Atanda-Owo, Chief Executive Officer of Z-Edge Limited, is a communications strategist who has been recognised as one of WiJAfrica’s Top 15 Most Powerful Women Journalists in Nigeria in recent years.
Contributions from speakers during the session underscored the value of documentation and critical engagement in sustaining democratic culture. Participants examined the role of media in shaping public accountability and debated reforms necessary to strengthen governance structures.
Audience members took part in interactive discussions, raising questions on institutional transparency, policy continuity and the responsibilities of public intellectuals.
The Laterna Book Club, which hosts regular literary events, continues to serve as a forum for critical reflection and civic dialogue in Lagos, bringing together authors, professionals and members of the reading public.
