Fire engulfs Kano’s Singa market

A fire outbreak on Saturday night ravaged another section of the popular Singa Market, destroying millions of naira worth of commodities, just a week after a similar blaze caused losses estimated in billions.

Unlike last week’s incident, which spread across several buildings, Saturday’s fire reportedly started at “Gidan Gilas,” a complex housing multiple warehouses and grocery stocks.

Eyewitnesses said the fire was reported around 9 p.m., after the market had closed, and quickly engulfed the complex, prompting traders and residents to rush to evacuate their goods. Flames were reported spreading to adjacent buildings, heightening panic in the busy market area.

Officials of the Kano State Fire Service reportedly arrived at the scene but struggled to contain the inferno. A private tanker from Aspira Nigeria Limited also assisted, but the fire’s intensity limited efforts.

The cause of the outbreak remains unknown, as the fire service has yet to release an official statement.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who conducted an on-the-spot inspection Saturday night, ordered an urgent investigation into the recurring fires.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor urged the Federal Government to provide modern firefighting equipment, including air support and other essential tools, to help prevent future disasters.
Governor Yusuf commended the efforts of the fire service and security agencies, calling on traders and residents to remain calm and cooperate with emergency responders as efforts continue to bring the situation under control.
