EIGHT men have been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court over alleged cultism and an attack on the Ijaniki Police Station in Lagos.
The defendants — Nurudeen Adeniyi, 23; Idris Dauda, 20; Quadri Fadipe, 22; Selim Tunde, 19; Afolabi Kundus, 19; Ojo Michael, 37; Ahmed Azeez, 20; and Nurudeen Dare, 39 — are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy, membership of an unlawful society and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
The prosecutor, SP Josephine Ikhayere, told the court that the defendants and others still at large allegedly conspired on February 1 at about 3:00 a.m. in the Ijaniki area to commit felony, namely belonging to an unlawful society and engaging in conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
She further alleged that the defendants are members of the proscribed Eiye Confraternity and that they attacked the Ijaniki Police Station with stones, sticks, iron rods and other dangerous weapons.
According to the prosecution, the offences contravene Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and Section 2(3)(a)(b)(c)(d) of the Unlawful Societies Prohibition and Cultism Law of Lagos State, 2021.
The court declined to take the defendants’ pleas.
The Magistrate, Mr Lateef A. Owolabi, ordered that they be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the case until March 24, 2026.
