Engr. David Umahi, Minister of Works, has expressed optimism that the 78.62-kilometer Katsina-Ala–Tordonga–Takum road rehabilitation will enhance security and stimulate the local economy once completed.
Speaking during an inspection of the ongoing project, Umahi emphasized that the President Bola Tinubu administration is committed to an inclusive approach, ensuring all communities benefit from national development initiatives. Represented by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mallam Mohammed Ahmed Abdullahi, the Minister urged the contractor to adhere strictly to the contractual terms.
Engr. Mukaila Danladi, Controller of Works for the Federal Ministry of Works in Benue State, explained that work had been delayed due to the state’s ban on mining activities, which required materials to be sourced from Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. He also cited security challenges and the breakdown of the asphalt-making machine, which has now been replaced.
Engr. Ukeyima Manger, immediate past chairman of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), commended President Tinubu for awarding the contract and highlighted the project’s potential to improve the local economy. He advised the contractor to water the road at least twice daily to minimize health hazards for surrounding communities.
Engr. James Ingbian, Project Coordinator for Gerawa Global Engineering, noted that the contract was awarded in 2023 but faced delays due to security issues and the mining ban. He assured that work resumption would deliver quality results per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the federal government.
As part of the project, a flood mitigation and repair initiative, including the construction of a 90cm ring culvert at Kilometer 19, Ushongo town, has been inaugurated to enhance road safety and protect surrounding communities.
