Former Abia State Governor and Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has defended the role of the Catholic Church in Nigeria, describing the bishops as voices of truth whose interventions are driven by patriotism rather than politics. Speaking on the relationship between the Church and the government, Kalu stressed that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria has a responsibility to speak frankly on issues affecting the country, even when such messages may be uncomfortable for those in power.

Whenever the Catholic Bishops offer advice, it is not out of partisanship or political bargaining but out of a genuine concern for the well-being of the nation and its people. Their counsel is meant to guide leaders toward justice, accountability, and good governance.»

«I support the position of the Catholic Church. The bishops are simply pointing out the realities Nigerians face every day and urging the government to address them. Rather than dismissing or attacking their views, the government should listen and reflect on the concerns they have raised.»

Kalu maintained that while political associates may sometimes shield leaders from uncomfortable realities, the Catholic bishops have consistently remained committed to telling the truth in the interest of the nation. He urged leaders to view constructive criticism as an opportunity to improve governance rather than as an attack on the government.
